ABOUT
Introduction By: Jon Hunsicker
The Freethought Society of Jasper was formed by us because we wanted to help people but lacked the resources and manpower to accomplish the work we envisioned. We feel we have the ability to make a difference in the lives of others and want to make this a reality. Our goal and vision is to make a positive impact in whatever area we have the ability to or where we feel our knowledge and effort could be of use. Our main commonality is our secular beliefs.
Don’t let that be misleading though. We are primarily a helpful, contributing group and a secular group secondary. We hold strong beliefs but not in a superstitious way. We believe that people can be good on their own - that they can be moral, caring beings, good without god.
We share a lot of our ideas with the American Humanist Association, which is why we are in the process of becoming an affiliate. Becoming affiliated with an organization like theirs will give us a great support system, legal backing, and resources that we, as a small group, would never have been able to get on our own.
Knowing our ideas and beliefs, everyone also needs to be informed of what we don't want or represent. We are not an anti-religion group. It is not our purpose to hate or protest the church. It is this hate and bigotry that we wish to steer clear of - why we are starting this group in the first place. We will not tolerate this kind of attitude in our group. We will maintain a level of professionalism because, without this, no one will take our endeavors seriously, we will have no respect from other members of the community, and the backlash from the religious community will be unreal. We joke from time to time about the ridiculousness of organized religion, but all in good fun and in private. This will not be our projected image.
In summation, we are here to be a asset to our fellow man in the community. We will act as a whole in our endeavors and everyone's input will be appreciated. We are here to make our community a better place for others as well as ourselves. We will act in a professional manner to accomplish these things, yet stand up when we believe our rights are infringed. I believe, together, we can make a difference and I welcome you all to accept this as a challenge and a growing experience to enrich our own lives as well as others.
